Why is access control so important?
Let’s start with the definition of access control. Access control is the selective restriction of access to a place or system. Physical access control can be achieved through mechanical means such as locks and keys, or through technological means such as passwords, or key card and fingerprint scanners.
Various access control devices are available, which include turnstiles, boom gates, glass mantrap booths etc. These determine who, where and when an individual is allowed to enter or exit any given area or building.
Technological advancements
With the advancement of technology, it has become quite easy to track the usage of entry points and who has accessed them. Comprehensive reports can be pulled to see specific individual movements, time periods and frequency of use.
Individuals can use one of these three main ways to authenticate their credentials, allowing a software system to track them:
- Password or PIN
- key card
- Biometric fingerprint verification
Security Factors
Tailgating, a method of simply following an individual through a door, access gate, boom gate etc, is one of the most common security risks. Installing a turnstile or mantrap, which uses electronic verification and only allows one user at a time, severely reduces this risk.
Positive identification through biometrics is key to proper access control. Certain software solutions allow a central operating point to grant or rebuke access at any given time.
